Lights, Camera, Curse? The Strangest Events to Happen on Movie Sets - What Then Studio

Hollywood loves a good ghost story, but sometimes the most terrifying tales don't end when the director yells "Cut!" From unexplainable accidents to chilling paranormal encounters, movie history is littered with productions that seemed plagued by forces beyond the script.

Whether you’re a skeptic or a believer, these behind-the-scenes stories range from the bizarrely coincidental to the downright inexplicable. Here are some of the strangest events to ever happen on movie sets.

    1. The Omen (1976): A Series of Deadly Coincidences

If there is one movie that defines the term "cursed production," it is The Omen. The film, which centers on the adoption of the Antichrist, seemed to be followed by a dark cloud that affected almost everyone involved.

    • Lightning Strikes Twice (Literally): Lead actor Gregory Peck’s plane was struck by lightning on his way to London. Mere days later, executive producer Mace Neufeld’s plane was also struck by lightning.
    • The Tragic Accident: Perhaps the most chilling event involved special effects designer John Richardson. Following the film's wrap, he was in a car accident in the Netherlands. While he survived, his assistant, Liz Moore, was decapitated—an injury eerily similar to a death scene Richardson had designed for the film. Legend has it the crash occurred near a road sign that read "Ommen, 66.6 km."

    2. The Exorcist (1973): The Fire That Spared the Demon

The Exorcist is widely considered the scariest movie of all time, and its set was no sanctuary. The production was fraught with so much tension and injury that director William Friedkin eventually asked a Jesuit priest to bless the set.

    • The Unexplained Fire: During filming, a massive fire broke out and destroyed almost the entire set of the MacNeil family home. Production was delayed for six weeks. Strange enough on its own, but the only room that was left completely untouched by the flames was the bedroom of Regan (the possessed child).
    • Injuries and Death: Actors Ellen Burstyn and Linda Blair both suffered severe back injuries during stunt mishaps. Furthermore, actors Jack MacGowran and Vasiliki Maliaros, whose characters die in the film, both passed away in real life before the movie was released.

    3. The Passion of the Christ (2004): Electrical Intervention?

While filming the Sermon on the Mount scene in Italy, lead actor Jim Caviezel was struck by lightning. Witnesses reported seeing smoke coming from his ears, yet he walked away with no serious injuries.

Stranger still, the assistant director, Jan Michelini, wasn't just struck once—he was struck by lightning twice during the production. The odds of this happening are astronomical, leading many to wonder if the elements themselves were reacting to the film.

    4. Poltergeist (1982): The Skeletons in the Pool

The Poltergeist trilogy is infamous not just for its scares, but for the heartbreaking "Poltergeist Curse." Four cast members died during the six-year span between the first and third films, including young star Heather O'Rourke and Dominique Dunne.

However, the specific "strange event" that started the rumors occurred on the set of the first film. In the scene where the mother (JoBeth Williams) falls into a muddy pool filled with skeletons, the actress later learned that the production crew had used real human skeletons. At the time, they were cheaper to purchase than plastic replicas. Many fans believe this desecration is what triggered the subsequent tragedies.

    5. The Conjuring (2013): Digital Claw Marks

Modern horror films aren't immune to the weirdness. While filming The Conjuring, based on the case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren, the cast and crew reported strange phenomena, such as waking up between 3:00 and 4:00 AM (the "witching hour" in the movie).

The strangest account comes from actress Vera Farmiga, who played Lorraine Warren. She refused to bring the script home with her because it made her uneasy. Once, she opened her laptop to find three distinct digital "claw marks" scratched across the screen. Later, after filming wrapped, she claimed to find similar claw-like bruises on her thigh, despite having no physical accidents on set.

    6. The Crow (1994): A Prophecy Fulfilled?

The death of Brandon Lee on the set of The Crow is a well-documented tragedy caused by a prop gun malfunction. However, the strangeness lies in the eerie coincidences surrounding it.

The plot of the movie involves a rock star who returns from the grave to avenge his own murder, which happened the night before his wedding. In real life, Brandon Lee was killed days before his own planned wedding. Additionally, his father, martial arts legend Bruce Lee, had starred in Game of Death, a film where his character plays an actor who is shot by a real bullet replaced in a prop gun—a nearly identical scenario to how his son tragically died decades later.
