The "Alien Scorecard" Just Got Updated: Why 3I/ATLAS Is Now a Level 4 - What Then Studio

If you have been trying to keep up with the news about 3I/ATLAS—the massive interstellar object currently speeding through our solar system—you probably feel like you have whiplash. First, it was a potential alien probe. Then, the mainstream media told us it was "just a comet." Now? The script has flipped again.

In a blistering new update, Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb has officially raised the alert level back to Level 4 on his famous Classification Scale. But to understand why this is a big deal, we have to look at the timeline of the "Great Downgrade"—and why Loeb says the skeptics got it wrong. Here is the full story of the most controversial object in the sky.

Phase 1: The Initial Alarm (The First Level 4)

October 2025: "It looks like 'Oumuamua"

When astronomers first spotted 3I/ATLAS, alarm bells rang immediately. It was moving too fast to be from around here, and its orbit was bizarre. Avi Loeb immediately flagged it as a Level 4 candidate—meaning it showed "technosignatures" (signs of technology) rather than natural physics.

The scientific community was buzzing. Was this 'Oumuamua 2.0? Was it a mothership? The "Alien Score" was high because, initially, it looked like a dark, tumbling metal object with no tail. It was the perfect candidate for an interstellar probe.

Phase 2: The "Just a Rock" Buzzkill

December 2025: The Downgrade to Level 1

Then came the "I told you so" moment from mainstream science. As the object got closer to the Sun, some telescopes detected what looked like "outgassing"—gas spraying off the surface.

NASA and other institutions breathed a sigh of relief. "See? It has gas. It's a comet. Case closed." The narrative shifted overnight. The Loeb Scale plummeted to a Level 1 (Natural Object). The media ran stories telling everyone to calm down, claiming it was just a dirty snowball from deep space. The "aliens ignored Earth" narrative took over, implying it was just a dumb rock floating by.

Phase 3: The Comeback (Back to Level 4)

    The "Anti-Tail" Changes Everything

But Avi Loeb didn't let it go. In his latest analysis, he argues that the "comet" explanation has a massive, gaping hole in it.

The Anomaly: 3I/ATLAS has an "Anti-Tail." Normal comet tails are pushed away from the Sun by solar wind. This object has a massive jet of material shooting towards the Sun. Physics says that shouldn't happen naturally. It’s like watching a boat move upstream without a motor.

Because of this "non-gravitational acceleration" that standard comet models can't explain, Loeb has officially upgraded the object back to Level 4. He argues we need a "Dynamic Scale"—one that doesn't just reset to zero every time a skeptic makes a guess. The anomalies are stacking up, and the "it's just a comet" theory is falling apart.

    What's Next? The Jupiter Rendezvous

    March 2026 is the deadline

So, where does that leave us? We have an object that behaves like a ship (maneuvering towards the Sun) but looks like a rock. The tie-breaker is coming in March 2026.

3I/ATLAS is on a trajectory to pass suspiciously close to Jupiter—specifically within its "Hill Radius" (gravity well). Loeb speculates that if this is an artificial probe, it might be using Jupiter for a gravity assist, or even deploying smaller "dandelion seed" probes into the gas giant's orbit. If it makes a sharp turn near Jupiter that physics can't explain, the scale won't just hit Level 4—it might break the thermometer.

    My Take

Science is messy. The "flip-flopping" of the Loeb Scale isn't a sign of confusion; it's a sign of a battle between old dogmas and new data. Mainstream science wants it to be a rock because rocks are safe. Avi Loeb is willing to bet it's something else. And right now? The "Anti-Tail" says Loeb is winning.
