  • The Airbnb from Hell: Why You Should Never Rent an Old House with a Locked Basement

    Dec 22, 2025by Daniel Wood

We’ve all stayed in an Airbnb that was a little... off. Maybe the sheets smelled like mothballs, or the host texted you too many times. But TikTok user Sydney just raised the bar for "worst vacation ever."

The Airbnb from Hell: Why You Should Never Rent an Old House with a Locked Basement - What Then Studio

What started as a cute video of her dog acting weird turned into a full-blown paranormal investigation that has the internet terrified. From locked doors that rattle on their own to invisible hands grabbing phones, this story is the reason I’m sticking to hotels. Check out the craziest moments from her stay below.

Watch: The terrifying footage starts at 5:26. Don't say we didn't warn you.

    1. Animals Always Know First

    The Rottweiler refused to move

The horror movie rules are real: If the dog is scared, you leave. Sydney’s Rottweiler—a dog bred for protection—became obsessed with the staircase. He would just stand there, frozen, staring at the steps.

Sydney thought he was looking up the stairs, but then she realized he was sniffing at a locked door under the stairs. A door that had a light on behind it. In an Airbnb. Where no one else was supposed to be. That is immediate "get in the car" energy.

    2. The Phone Grab

    Something wanted her phone

This is the moment that made me throw my own phone across the room. Sydney, being brave (or crazy), decided to slide her phone under the locked door to see what was inside.

The first time? The handle rattled violently as she pulled it back. The second time? Something yanked the phone out of her hand. You can see it tumble down the stairs. And then—this is the worst part—the phone moves again on its own while it's lying on the floor. It’s one thing for a ghost to make noise; it’s another thing for it to physically snatch your property.

    3. The Invisible Runner

    Footsteps and floating leashes

If the basement wasn't enough, the stairs themselves were active. In one clip, you clearly hear heavy footsteps running up the stairs, but the camera shows... nothing.

Simultaneously, the dog’s heavy leash, which was lying on the floor, flies upward as if someone kicked it or pulled it. It defies gravity. Sydney also noted strange scratch marks on the back of the basement door and pointed out a creepy "nested triangle" tattoo on the owner's hand when he finally came to unlock the door. Coincidence? Or is this house hiding something much darker than a basement?

    The Bottom Line

I don't know what kind of "Superhost" status this owner has, but I’m giving this place zero stars. If your rental comes with locked doors that rattle and invisible roommates who steal your phone, maybe just book a Holiday Inn next time.
