  • The "New Normal" in Wyoming: Why Car-Sized Drones Are Stalking Power Plants

    Dec 19, 2025by Daniel Wood

Imagine driving through the pitch-black darkness of Wyoming’s Red Desert at 2:00 a.m. The only light comes from the stars and your headlights. Suddenly, a formation of lights appears above you—not flickering stars, but steady, mechanical glints moving with impossible precision.

The "New Normal" in Wyoming: Why Car-Sized Drones Are Stalking Power Plants

This isn’t a scene from The X-Files. For the residents and law enforcement of Sweetwater County, Wyoming, this has become a terrifying reality. Since late 2024, massive unidentified drones have been swarming critical infrastructure, and they aren't just watching the power plants—they are watching the people. Here is the breakdown of the bizarre mystery happening right now at the Jim Bridger Power Plant.

    1. These Aren't Your Nephew's Toys

They are the size of SUVs

When you hear "drone," you probably picture a little plastic quadcopter buzzing around a park. Erase that image. Sheriff John Grossnickle of Sweetwater County has gone on record describing these Unidentified Aerial Systems (UAS) as massive. We are talking about wingspans of six feet or more, with some witnesses describing "motherships" the size of small cars.

These machines are sophisticated. They fly in high winds that would ground a commercial drone instantly. They operate in coordinated swarms, blinking in unison, and have been seen loitering in the sky for hours. The battery power required to keep a car-sized object airborne for that long suggests technology that isn't available at your local Best Buy. As Sheriff Grossnickle put it, this isn't a hobbyist; this is a state actor or a massive corporation.

    2. The Hunter Becomes the Hunted

The drones chased police for 30 miles

Here is the part that sends shivers down the spine. In most UFO or drone sightings, the object flies away when spotted. In Sweetwater County, they are getting aggressive. In one reported incident, deputies weren't just watching the drones—the drones turned the tables.

After spotting the unidentified craft near the power plant, officers reported being followed by the objects for over 30 miles back to the Sheriff’s Office in Green River. Imagine looking in your rearview mirror and seeing a formation of silent lights matching your speed, mile after mile, through the empty desert. It’s a brazen display of dominance that has left local law enforcement feeling outgunned and surveilled.

    3. The "Grid" Search

    What are they looking for?

Witnesses aren't just seeing random flying; they are seeing a mission. The lights appear nightly between 2:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m., flying in perfect "grid" patterns over the Jim Bridger Power Plant, one of the largest coal-fired facilities in the West.

It looks exactly like a mapping operation. They sweep back and forth, gathering data, before disappearing before sunrise. This has raised alarm bells all the way to Washington, with U.S. Representative Harriet Hageman visiting the site and witnessing the swarm herself. If they are mapping our energy grid, who is receiving the data? Is it foreign espionage? A secret security test? Or something else entirely?

    4. The Deafening Silence

    Nobody admits to owning them

Usually, a quick call to the nearest Air Force base clears this up. But not this time. The FAA claims they have no idea who is flying them. F.E. Warren Air Force Base, which manages the nuclear missile silos in the region, has denied involvement. The energy companies say it's not them.

We are left with a terrifying equation: We have military-grade hardware, operating with impunity over American soil, chasing American police officers, and absolutely no one knows who is holding the remote control. As the Sheriff says, this is the "new normal," and until someone catches one of these metal birds, the skies over Wyoming remain a mystery.
