Are Octopuses Aliens? The Science Behind the Viral Theory - What Then Studio

Watch: The Science Behind the Theory

Is the Octopus Alien Theory Real Science?

The theory that octopuses are extraterrestrial stems largely from a **2018 scientific paper** titled "Cause of Cambrian Explosion – Terrestrial or Cosmic?" The study, signed by 33 researchers, revived the concept of Panspermia, proposing that frozen octopus eggs or embryos may have arrived on Earth via icy comets roughly 500 million years ago, triggering their sudden evolution.

Imagine a creature with three hearts, blue blood, and a brain that is distributed throughout its arms. If you were looking for an alien hiding on Earth, wouldn't you start in the ocean? At What Then Studio, we investigate the biology that makes this theory so persistent.

Why Octopuses Are Considered "Biological Aliens"

The octopus follows a completely different evolutionary blueprint than almost any other intelligent species on Earth. Here is the breakdown of their unique physiology:

    • Distributed Intelligence: Two-thirds of an octopus's neurons are located in its arms, not its head. This allows each arm to "think," sense, and react independently.
    • Blue Blood: Unlike mammals that use iron-based hemoglobin, octopuses use hemocyanin (copper-based) to transport oxygen, which is more efficient in cold, low-oxygen environments.
    • Instant Camouflage: Their skin is covered in chromatophores, neural-controlled pigment sacs that allow them to change color and texture in milliseconds—faster than any chameleon.

    Comparison: Human vs. Octopus Intelligence

    Feature Human (Mammal) Octopus (Cephalopod)
Brain Structure Centralized (Head) Distributed (Arms + Head)
Genetic Editing DNA Mutations (Slow) RNA Editing (On-the-fly)
Lifespan 70-80 Years 1-5 Years (Rapid turnover)

    The "Cryopreserved Egg" Hypothesis

The 2018 study argued that the octopus's complex genome appeared too suddenly in the fossil record to be explained by gradual mutation. The authors suggested two "cosmic" possibilities:

    1. Retro-Viruses: Space-borne viruses infected primitive squid, rewriting their DNA.
    2. Cryopreservation: Fertilized octopus eggs crashed into the ocean on a meteor and hatched, essentially making them an invasive species from space.

While mainstream science largely rejects this view in favor of convergent evolution, the octopus remains our best model for understanding non-human intelligence. As we noted in our film:

"Whether alien or not, octopuses may be the closest thing we have to meeting a non-human intelligence. Their minds evolved down a separate path—an experiment by nature itself."
